A first massage at home is simpler than most people expect. Your therapist brings the massage bed, oils, towels and clean sheets; you supply a quiet room and about an hour. Most first-timers do best with a 60-minute Swedish massage (AED 165), because the pressure is gentle and easy to adjust.
Before the therapist arrives
- Choose the room. A bedroom or a quiet corner of the living room works. Leave enough floor for a folding bed plus a walkway round it, roughly what a single bed needs.
- Warm it up slightly. You will be lying still, so set the AC a degree or two higher than normal. Dim the lights and close the curtains if you can.
- Look after yourself. Have a quick shower, avoid a large meal for an hour beforehand, and take off watches and jewellery.
- Clear distractions. Put pets in another room and set your phone to silent.
When they arrive
The therapist will ask about injuries, sore areas and the pressure you like, then set up the bed with fresh sheets. While you get ready under a towel they wait outside. You decide how much to take off; most people keep underwear on, and only the part of the body being worked on is uncovered.
During the session
You usually begin face down and turn over around the halfway point. Your only job is to breathe out and let your muscles go heavy. Speak up whenever you need to: “a little firmer”, “lighter on my lower back”, “skip my feet”. Therapists expect feedback and it makes the massage better.
Afterwards
Sit up slowly, since a brief light-headed feeling is normal. Drink water, keep the evening gentle and expect a good night of sleep. The therapist packs everything away, including the used linen, so there is nothing to clean up.

Questions people ask
What should I wear?
Anything easy to remove. You stay covered by a towel throughout. For Thai massage, wear loose stretchy clothing, because it is done clothed.
Do I have to undress fully?
No. Undress only as far as you are comfortable with; the therapist covers you and uncovers one area at a time.
Can I talk during the massage?
Of course. Many people chat early on and fall quiet once they relax. Either is fine.
