Thai massage feels very different from an oil massage. You stay in loose clothes, there is no oil, and the therapist combines rhythmic pressure with assisted stretches. At home with Zigy Spa it starts at AED 230 for 60 minutes.
What to wear
Choose stretchy, loose clothing such as a t-shirt and jogging bottoms or yoga trousers. Avoid jeans, belts and zips. Remove watches and jewellery, and tie back long hair.
What happens
- The therapist talks through any injuries and tight areas.
- You lie on your back first while legs, hips and feet are pressed and gently stretched.
- You then move onto your side and stomach for the back and shoulders.
- Some stretches are assisted, where the therapist guides a limb slowly into a deeper position.
Pressure is firm but should feel productive, never sharp. Stretching should reach a comfortable edge, not push past it.
How it differs from an oil massage
Thai massage is done with you in loose clothing, using a mix of rhythmic pressure, stretching and gentle guided movement. The therapist uses hands, thumbs, forearms and sometimes knees or feet to move your body through stretches. There is little or no oil, which is why clothing stays on.
How to prepare
- Avoid eating a heavy meal in the hour before.
- Clear a floor or bed-sized area in a quiet room.
- Mention injuries, joint problems or pregnancy before starting.
Who it suits
People who feel stiff, sit for long hours, want better mobility, or dislike oily skin. It also works well after a long flight. It is less suited to anyone seeking a drowsy, floating relaxation; for that choose Swedish massage.
Who should check first
Speak to your doctor before booking if you are pregnant, recovering from injury or surgery, have joint problems, or take blood thinners.
After the session
You will often feel taller and looser, particularly in the hips and back. Drink water and move gently for the rest of the day.
Thai massage is AED 230 for 60 minutes, AED 280 for 90 and AED 335 for 120. All prices include 5% VAT and the AED 9 service fee, so the price you see is the price you pay.
Questions people ask
Is there oil in Thai massage?
No. It is performed through clothing without oil.
Does it hurt?
It is firm, and stretches can feel strong, but you should always be able to breathe normally. Say so if anything is too much.
How much space is needed?
A little more than for a table massage, because you will be moved and stretched. Clear a room-sized area around the mat.
Is it good for desk workers?
Yes. Hips, lower back and shoulders usually benefit most.
Can I book a female therapist?
Yes, at no extra cost.
